Etymology: < the name of Thomas George Morton (1835–1903), U.S. surgeon, who described the condition in 1876 ( Amer. Jrnl. Med. Sci. 71 37).
Medicine.
In the genitive, esp. in Morton's metatarsalgia, Morton's toe. Designating a syndrome characterized by severe, stabbing pain at a metatarsophalangeal joint (originally, and most commonly, the fourth), attributed to compression of the plantar digital nerve by the metatarsal head.
