Etymology: Probably short for muckle-hammer, variant of mickle-hammer n. at mickle adj., pron., and adv. Compounds, although compare Dutch moker (1657), Dutch mooker (1681), German regional (Low German) maker (1771), German regional (Low German: East Friesland) möker, German moker (1796), all denoting heavy hammers and apparently frequently in nautical use (see F. Kluge Seemannsprache (1911) 580). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒ·k'l) /ˈmʌk(ə)l/.
Obsolete. rare.
