Etymology: < E, perhaps as the initial letter of enemy n.¹ and adj. + boat n.¹The view, frequently expressed, that E represents German Eile ‘speed’ is purely speculative. The usual German word for a speedboat is Schnellboot.

Esp. in the war of 1939–45: an enemy torpedo-boat.
