Etymology: < the name of Mother Shipton, a probably mythical prophetess of the early 16th cent.The myth of Mother Shipton begins with an anonymous tract of 1641 entitled Prophecie of Mother Shipton in Raigne of King Henry 8th, which reports her supposed foretelling of the deaths of Cardinal Wolsey and others. Her deformed features, images of which are responsible for this application of the name, are first found described in R. Head Life & Death of Mother Shipton (1677).

A day-flying Eurasian noctuid moth, Callistege mi, having a wavy mark on each forewing likened to the face of a crone; also called shipton moth.
