Etymology: < mole n.³ + plough n.¹So called because the channel made by the plough resembles a mole's tunnel. Compare later use of mole to refer to the shoe itself (see mole n.³ 6a).

A kind of plough which draws along a pointed iron shoe or similar borer attached to an upright support so as to make a hollow drainage channel beneath the surface of the ground.Quot. 1362 may illustrate a different word, perhaps related to mould n.¹
