Etymology: Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsteam-ˌengine.
a. An engine in which the mechanical force of steam is made available as a motive power for driving machinery, etc. Earlier names were fire-engine (see fire engine n. 2) and atmospheric engine (Newcomen). The ordinary (stationary) engine is due to James Watt (patented 1769).
