Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monostomus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin monostomus (J. F. Brandt 1835, in Recueil des actes de la séance publique de l'Acad. Imp. des Sci. de St.-Petersbourg 218; < mono- mono- comb. form + ancient Greek στόμα mouth: see -stome comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek μονόστομος having one opening (a medical term). Compare slightly later monostome adj., and also polystomous adj.
Zoology. Obsolete.
Having only one mouth or opening.
