mogi-comb. form
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek μογι-, μόγις.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μογι-, combining form (in e.g. μογιλάλος : see mogilalia n.) of ancient Greek μόγις with toil and pain, with difficulty < μόγος toil (of unknown origin) + -ις, suffix forming adverbs. Compare German mogi- (formations in which are found from at least the second half of the 19th cent.), French mogi- (formations in which are found from at least the second half of the 19th cent.).Attested in loans from post-classical Latin (beginning of the 19th cent. in mogilalia n.) and German (end of the 19th cent. in mogiphonia n.). Formations in English are found from the middle of the 19th cent. (see mogigraphia n., mogigraphy n., mogigraphic adj.). Combined with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
