Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin modius.
Etymology: < classical Latin modius measuring vessel, specific dry measure, in post-classical Latin also in sense 2 (4th cent.) < modus mode n. + -ius, suffix forming adjectives.
Now historical.
1. In ancient Rome: a measure of corn equal to about a peck (approx. 2 imperial gallons or 9 litres). In the Middle Ages: any of various measures of dry or liquid capacity, often equated with a bushel. Cf. muid n.1 1.
