单词 modificative
释义

modificativen.adj.

Brit. /ˈmɒdᵻfᵻkətɪv/, U.S. /ˌmɑdəfəˈkeɪdɪv/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin modificativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin modificativus (adjective) that moderates, (in grammatical use) that modifies or qualifies (late 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin modificāt- , past participial stem of modificāre (see modify v.) + -īvus -ive suffix; compare -ative suffix. Compare Middle French, French modificatif , adjective (1490 in legal use in sense ‘tending to introduce a modification’, 1610 in sense ‘modifying the sense of other words’) and noun (1709 in Buffier denoting a word that determines the sense of other words (see quot. 17282 at sense A.), 1762 in sense ‘that which modifies’). Compare earlier modificate v., and also earlier modificator n., modifier n.
