Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Greek μονάκανθος , -id suffix³; Latin Monacanthidae.

Etymology: In sense A. 1 < ancient Greek μονάκανθος having a single spine or prickle ( < μονο- mono- comb. form + ἄκανθα thorn, spine: see acanthus n.) + -id suffix³. In senses A. 2 and B. < scientific Latin Monacanthidae, family name < Monacanthus , genus name (L. Oken 1817, in Isis 148 1183; < ancient Greek μονάκανθος ) + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare French monacanthe fish with a rudimentary dorsal fin (1828).
