Etymology: < Mona Lisa, the name in English of a portrait painted (1503–6) by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) < Italian Monna Lisa (del Giocondo) , the name of the portrayed woman, wife of Francesco del Giocondo ( < Monna ( < Madonna : see Madonna n.) + Lisa , female forename); the painting is called La Gioconda in Italian (compare Gioconda n.).
