Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymons: Japanese mompe, mompē, mombe.
Etymology: < Japanese mompe (1891; also as mompē, regional as mombe) < Ainu omompe, omumbe trousers ( < om thigh + -umbe that which is put on), with loss of o- probably through mistaken perception as Japanese honorific o-.A suggested derivation < the name of a Mamoru Monpei, the supposed inventor, is unsupported by any biographical or documentary evidence.
With plural and (occasionally) singular agreement. Baggy working trousers worn in Japan, esp. by women.
