Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praeponderāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin praeponderāre to outweigh, to be of greater weight, to incline in a particular direction, in post-classical Latin also to overburden (Vetus Latina), to outweigh in importance (4th cent.), to exceed (5th cent.) < prae- pre- prefix + ponderāre ponder v. Compare later preponderate v.2, and the Romance parallels cited at that entry.
Now rare.
