Origin: A borrowing from Fanakalo. Etymon: Fanakalo mompara.
Etymology: < Fanakalo mompara a fool, waste material, of uncertain origin.Perhaps a prefixed formation < Afrikaans baar uncouth, rough, uncivilized, stupid, untrained (see bare adj.). See further Dict. S. Afr. Eng. on Historical Princ. (1996) at cited word.
South African.
1. derogatory. In the mining industry: a raw recruit, esp. from a rural, tribal background. Also more generally: an unsophisticated person unaccustomed to Western ways.
