Etymology: < classical Latin multipeda (also multiped-, multipēs) a small creature with many feet or legs < multi- multi- comb. form + pēs foot (see -ped comb. form), after ancient Greek πολύπους polypus n. Compare quadruped n.Compare Middle English multipes denoting a nasal polyp (after post-classical Latin multipes, in this sense attributed to Avenzoar (12th cent.)):?a1425 tr.
