Etymology: < Italian modello (see model n.). Compare modelletto n.In plural form modelli after the Italian plural form. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (mǫ̆de·lo) /moˈdello/.
Art.
A sketch for a larger painting, often executed in detail, which is prepared for a patron's approval. Also: a small model for a larger sculpture. Cf. bozzetto n., maquette n.
