Etymology: < monkey n. + puzzle n., apparently so called on account of being supposed difficult even for a monkey to climb. Compare puzzle-monkey n. at puzzle v. Compounds.
1. A large evergreen coniferous tree, Araucaria araucana (family Araucariaceae), native to Chile, with tough, spiked, triangular leaves densely arranged to cover the whorled branches; also monkey-puzzle tree. Also called Chile pine. Cf. puzzle-monkey n. at puzzle v. Compounds.
