单词 moc-main
释义

moc-mainn.

Origin: A borrowing from Chinese. Etymon: Chinese mùmián.
Etymology: < Chinese mùmián silk-cotton tree, Bombax ceiba, silk cotton, kapok < tree + mián cotton, silk floss. The word was probably borrowed into English via a conservative Chinese dialect in which the first element retains a final consonant (e.g. Hakka muk). N.E.D. (1907) notes that C. L. Wildenow tr. J. de Loureiro Flora Cochinchinensis (1793) gives mo-mien-hoa as the Chinese name for the ceiba or kapok tree, Ceiba pentandra. Compare Chinese miánhuā cotton < mián (see above) + huā flower. N.E.D. gives the pronunciation as (mǫ·kmēin) /ˈmɒkmeɪn/.
Obsolete.
A silky elastic fibre derived from the seed pods of the Indian silk-cotton tree, Bombax ceiba; (also) the tree itself.Kapok, a similar fibre derived from the ceiba tree ( Ceiba pentandra), is now used in preference as a material for padding, stuffing, etc. (see kapok n.).
