Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -genous comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -genous comb. form. Compare monogeneous adj., monogenetic adj., monogenic adj.1, and also monogenesis n., monogenist n., monogeny n. Compare also earlier polygenous adj.R. G. Mayne gives a Latin form monogenus (see quot. 1857 at sense 1).
1. Botany. Of a plant: growing from apical meristem only, rather than from apical and lateral meristems. Obsolete. rare.
