Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monogamus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monogamus a man who marries only once (3rd cent.; < Hellenistic Greek μονόγαμος < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + -γαμος : see -gamous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French monogame married only once (1495; rare before 19th cent.; early 18th cent. in sense ‘with only one wife at a time’, early 19th cent. in sense 3a, 1840 in sense 1a). Compare also earlier polygamous adj.In sense 3 after scientific Latin Monogamia Monogamia n.
