Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: molossus n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < molossus n. + -ic suffix, probably after post-classical Latin Molossicus (4th cent.; in classical Latin designating the breed of dog) or Hellenistic Greek Μολοσσικός (in ancient Greek designating the breed of dog). Compare French molossique (1840 in this sense; attested in Middle French denoting a kind of ancient dance (1564 in Rabelais)).
Prosody. rare.
Using or composed of molossi; having a rhythm resembling that of a molossus. Also in extended use.
