Etymology: < classical Latin monit- , past participial stem of monēre to advise, warn (see moneo n.) + -ive suffix. Compare post-classical Latin monitivus admonitory (c1376 in a British source), Middle French monitif (mid 15th cent. as noun and adjective; also in the phrase lettres monitives ). Compare also admonitive adj.
