释义

comptrollern.

Brit. /kənˈtrəʊlə/, /kəmpˈtrəʊlə/, /ˌkɒmpˈtrəʊlə/, U.S. /kənˈtroʊlər/, /ˌkɑm(p)ˈtroʊlər/
Forms: late Middle English compterolleur, late Middle English–1500s comptrollour, late Middle English– comptroller, 1500s comtroller, 1500s–1600s comptroler, 1500s–1600s comptrowller.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: controller n.
Etymology: Alteration of controller n., by association of cont- , count- in that word with compt, variant of the etymologically unrelated verb count v.; compare β. forms at account v. and β. forms at account n.), and compare also β. forms at control v. and β. forms at control n.In later use, the retention of comptroller over controller in specific official titles was probably partly due to a desire to dissociate the title semantically from control v. With the form comptrollour compare -our suffix.
