Origin: A borrowing from Rapa Nui. Etymon: Rapa Nui moai.
Etymology: < Rapa Nui moai image.
Any of a number of large, stone statues on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), erected between 1400 and 1600 a.d., and believed to represent former chiefs or other high-ranking men. Also (more fully moai miro): a small figure carved from wood.
