Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French misère.
Etymology: < French misère poverty (see misery n.). Sense 2 is attested in French from 1843 or earlier; originally a term from the card game Boston n.2 (see discussion at that entry).Compare probable isolated earlier borrowing of Middle French misere in sense 1 (compare discussion at that entry misery n.):a1450 (c1410) H.
