Etymology: Apparently < Anglo-Norman mesuser (although this is only attested in the more general sense `‘improper use’: 14th cent. or earlier), use as noun (compare -er suffix⁴) of the infinitive of mesuser, misuser to abuse, violate, to do wrong (late 13th cent.; French mésuser ; < mes- mis- prefix² + user use v.).
