In later use: esp. each of a pair, often connected by a headband and worn round the head; usually in plural.Originally with reference to an earpiece used by the operator of a receiver used in telephone or radio communication; now usually referring to earphones used to listen to music or other media on a stereo system, portable music player, computer, etc.
