Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Missourium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Missourium (A. Koch 1841 or earlier: see quot. 18411) < the name of the U.S. state of Missouri (see Missouri n. and adj.), where the fossil skeleton was discovered + classical Latin -um, neuter ending.Compare Koch's slightly earlier formation Missourian:1839 A. Koch in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 37 192 Until it is recognized or proved to have been previously described, I shall name it Koch's Missourian.
Palaeontology. Now historical.
A large fossil skeleton (or composite of more than one skeleton) found in Missouri around 1839, originally claimed to be a new species but later identified as a mastodon ( Mammut americanus). Also figurative.
