Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Perhaps partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French mesaventureux ; misadventure n., -ous suffix.
Etymology: In quot. a1500 at main sense perhaps < Anglo-Norman mesaventureus, Middle French mesaventureux (1220 in Old French; < mesaventure misadventure n. + -eus -ous suffix); in later use probably independently < misadventure n. + -ous suffix. Compare disadventurous adj.
Unfortunate, unlucky; characterized by misadventure or misadventures.
