单词 absinth
释义

absinthn.

Brit. /ˈabsɪnθ/, U.S. /ˈæbˌsɪnθ/
Forms: late Middle English 1600s 1800s– absinth, late Middle English 1700s– absinthe (now nonstandard), 1500s absynthe, 1600s 1800s absynth, 1800s absanth.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French absinthe; Latin absinthium.
Etymology: < Middle French absinthe (French absinthe ) wormwood (second half of the 14th cent. in Middle French as assenz , in a text showing Italian influence; beginning of the 13th cent. in Old French as absince , denoting an alcoholic drink containing wormwood, probably wine mixed with wormwood) or its etymon classical Latin absinthium absinthium n. Compare Italian assenzio (a1311 denoting a drink made from wormwood, a1321 in figurative use denoting something extremely bitter, c1340 denoting the plant). With the figurative use in sense 2 compare French absinthe , in same sense (16th cent. in Middle French; now chiefly in the phrase de fiel et d'absinthe ‘gall and wormwood’). Compare absinthe n., a later independent borrowing of the French noun. N.E.D. (1884) enters both this and absinthe n. in a single entry, for which it also gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (absǣṅt) /absæ̃ːt/.
