Compare the parallel pairing of ancient Greek κινυρός wailing, plaintive, and κινυρίζειν to lament: the two pairs of words probably influenced one another, but the further etymology of each is unknown. Compare also ancient Greek μυρεῖσθαι to shed tears, weep for (perhaps cognate with μορμύρειν : see murmur v.), which may have exercised analogical influence.
