Etymology: < French mitraillade discharge of several cannons armed with small missiles (1794; in later use in sense ‘action of firing bursts from automatic weapons’) < mitraille mitraille n. + -ade -ade suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mitrayad) /mitrɑjad/.
Obsolete. rare.
Massacre or mass execution by volleys of mitraille; an instance of this.
