单词 mitosis
释义

mitosisn.

Brit. /mʌɪˈtəʊsɪs/, U.S. /maɪˈtoʊsəs/
Inflections: Plural mitoses Brit. /mʌɪˈtəʊsiːz/, U.S. /maɪˈtoʊsiz/.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mitosis.
Etymology: < German Mitosis (W. Flemming in Zellsubstanz, Kern u. Zelltheilung (1882) xxiv. 376) < Hellenistic Greek μιτο- (see mito- comb. form) + -osis -osis suffix. In a passage immediately preceding his coinage of Mitosis , Flemming also coins the term Mitosen (plural), presumably from ancient Greek μίτος thread (see mito- comb. form), to denote the nuclear figures observed during cell division. German Mitose later came to be used both for a mitotic figure and for the process of mitosis. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mitōu·sis) /mɪˈtəʊsɪs/.
