单词 nubilous
释义

nubilousadj.

Brit. /ˈnjuːbɪləs/, U.S. /ˈn(j)ubɪləs/
Forms: 1600s– nubilous; Scottish pre-1700 nubelus, pre-1700 nubilus.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nūbilōsus ; Latin nūbilus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin nūbilōsus cloudy (2nd cent. a.d.; < nūbilus (see below) + -ōsus), or < classical Latin nūbilus cloudy, dim, confused ( < nūbēs cloud (perhaps cognate with Baluchi nōd) + -ilus, suffix forming adjectives) + -ous suffix. Compare Italian nubiloso (a1258 or earlier, now literary; compare †nuviloso (a1276), nuvoloso (1282)), Middle French nubileux (1377), Spanish nubiloso (a1578 or earlier), Portuguese nubiloso (1781).
