单词 bonnibel
释义

bonnibeln.

Forms: 1500s bonibell, 1500s–1600s bonny bell, 1500s 1700s–1800s bonnibell, 1600s bonnie-bell, 1600s bonny-bell, 1600s bony-bell, 1600s–1700s bonibel, 1700s–1900s bonny belle, 1800s–1900s bonnibelle, 1800s bonnibel.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: French bonne et belle ; bonny adj., belle n.
Etymology: Either (i) < Middle French bonne et belle, feminine of bon et bel very fair, lit. ‘good and fair’ (mid 14th cent. or earlier) < bon good, here used for emphasis (see boon adj.) + et and + bel fair, favourable, (physically) beautiful (see beau adj.), with remodelling after bonny adj., or perhaps (ii) directly < bonny adj. + belle n. (although this is apparently first attested later). In either case probably influenced by both bellibone n. (compare quot. 1579) and bonylasse n. (also used as a synonym in the same text).Compare the female forename Bonnibel (apparently < this noun), which is still in use. N.E.D. (1887) gives the pronunciation as (bǫ·nibe:l) /ˈbɒnɪˌbɛl/.
Obsolete (archaic in later use).
An attractive girl or woman.Later use of the two-word form bonny belle does not represent a fixed collocation; cf. bonny adj. 1a and belle n.
