Etymology: < mount n.1 + of prep. + piety n., after Italian monte di pietà Monte di Pietà n. or French mont de piété Mont de Piété n. Compare Monte di Pietà n., Mont de Piété n., Mount of Pity n.
In Italy and France: a pawnbroking establishment instituted and run by the state for providing loans to the poor at low interest. Now only with allusion to the Italian or French terms. Cf. Mont de Piété n., Monte di Pietà n.
