Etymology: < absent v. + -ment suffix. Compare Middle French, French (rare) absentement action of absenting oneself, absence (1399 in a legal context in sense ‘fact of not standing for trial’, 16th cent. in general sense ‘absence’, subsequently from the 20th cent.). Compare earlier absence n., absenting n.
