Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic minbar.
Etymology: < Arabic minbar pulpit (in early texts also in sense ‘seat, chair, saddle’), noun of instrument < nabara to raise, elevate. Compare French minbar (1787, in form minnber ). Compare almemar n.The forms with -mb- reflect assimilation in colloquial Arabic pronunciation. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) enters the word under the spelling mimbar.
