Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin miliāria.
Etymology: < classical Latin miliāria a bird fattened on millet, probably the ortolan < milium millet (see milium n.1) + -āria -ary suffix1. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (miliˌēə·riˌă) /ˌmɪlɪˈɛːrɪə/.
Obsolete.
A bird that feeds on millet; perhaps the linnet, Acanthis cannabina, or the corn bunting, Emberiza calandra.

Originally: any disease characterized by the presence of a miliary skin rash. Later: spec. (frequently with distinguishing scientific Latin or English word) any of several types of skin rash resulting from superficial obstruction or disruption of sweat glands; esp. one characterized by vesicles on an erythematous base and accompanied by pruritus or a sensation of prickling (also called prickly heat). Cf. sudamina n.
