Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mispickel.

Etymology: < German †Mispickel (1546 in Agricola; also in Agricola as mispückel , mistpuckel ; also mieszpieckel , miszpieckel , mispütl (1564 in Mathesius); now Misspickel ); further etymology uncertain and disputed. Perhaps (as suggested by E. Taube in Sci. Monthly (1944) June 454–5) < Mist dung (see mix n.¹) + Buckel hill, hump (see buckle n.), after the unpleasant odour of the mineral when heated, or perhaps (as suggested in Das Große Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache (1999) at Misspickel) < miss- mis- prefix¹ + Buckel (see above), since the mineral was considered worthless. Compare French mispickel (1765 as mispikkel), Portuguese mispiquel.
