Etymology: < French mille-feuille (1907), earlier †mille-feuilles (in gâteau de mille feuilles , lit. ‘(cake of) a thousand leaves’ (apparently earliest attested 1735, in the French version of the text cited in quot. 1733)) < mille thousand ( < classical Latin mīlle : see milli- comb. form) + feuilles , plural of feuille leaf (see feuille n.).The French masculine noun mille-feuille is distinguished from its feminine homonym, which is cognate with English milfoil n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the pronunciation as (milföy) /milfœj/.
A rich confection consisting of thin layers of puff pastry with a filling of jam, cream, etc.; (also) a savoury pastry of the same kind with a filling of seafood, etc. Also figurative.
