milann.2

Forms: late Middle English mylan, late Middle English myllan, 1500s mylion.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French milan.
Etymology: < Middle French milan, millan (1480 in passages translated in quots. 14841, 14842; French milan ) < Old Occitan milan (13th cent.) < classical Latin mīluīnus milvine adj., probably via intermediate post-classical Latin forms *milvanus, *milanus. Compare Spanish milano (1220–50), Portuguese milhano (15th cent.), Italian milano (a1767); compare also ( < French) German Milan kite (19th cent.). N.E.D. gives another example from G. Turberville Bk. Faulconrie (1575) 124, but this source actually reads Vyllaine (see villain n. 2). The following example may perhaps show a variant of or error for the present word:1486 Bk. St. Albans diij v An Egle, a Bawtere, a Melowne.
Obsolete. rare.
