释义 | milagron. U.S. In Mexico and among Hispanic Americans: a small object, frequently an ornament or piece of jewellery, representing the subject of a petitionary prayer, usually fastened to the image of the Virgin or of a saint to strengthen the petition or to give thanks that the petition has been granted. ΚΠ 1894 Scribner's Mag. May 607/2 When I saw this Madonna.., it presented the appearance of an elegant French doll enshrined in glass. Attached to the skirts were numerous votive offerings, called by the Mexicans ‘milagros’, made of gold and silver, and shaped like heads, hearts, legs, arms, feet, hands, ears of corn, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, and things of that kind. Whenever the prayer of a devotee has been granted, gratitude compels him to attest the interposition of ‘La Virgen Sudanda’ by this formal proof in the shape of the appropriate ‘milagro’. 1985 Chicago Tribune (Nexis) 2 June (Travel section) 13 A collection of milagros (tiny figures sometimes representing afflicted parts of bodies used as petitions for miracles). 1991 Native Peoples Winter 28/2 In a small chapel..Mexican and Indian pilgrims were taking time with their saint—caressing the wooden carving of San Francisco in repose, pinning milagro, prayer-jewelry, on his Franciscan habit of earth-brown cloth, and making vows of future devotion in exchange for spiritual guidance and healing. 1998 Art Room Catal.
