Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Greek μικρόϕωνος , -ous suffix; micro- comb. form, -phonous comb. form.
Etymology: Either < ancient Greek μικρόϕωνος weak-voiced ( < μικρο- micro- comb. form + -ϕωνος : see -phonous comb. form) + -ous suffix, or independently < micro- comb. form + -phonous comb. form (compare megalophonous adj.). R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form microphonus and a French form microphone. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (məikrǫ·fŏnəs) /maɪˈkrɒfənəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
Having a weak voice.
