Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mimulus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mimulus (Linnaeus 1741, in Acta Soc. Regiæ Sci. Upsaliensis (1746) 82), probably < classical Latin mīmus mime n.1 + -ulus -ulus suffix, perhaps with allusion to the resemblance of the flowers to a mask (although actors in mimes in antiquity probably did not in fact wear masks).
1. A genus of the family Scrophulariaceae, which comprises annual and perennial moisture-loving plants (including monkey flowers and musk plants, often cultivated) with showy flowers that are in most species bright yellow and sometimes spotted or blotched with red; (also mimulus) a plant of this genus, esp. the monkey flower M. guttatus. Also with unmarked plural.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 634.
