Forms: 1800s– micraesthete, 1900s– micresthete (U.S.).
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: micro- comb. form, Greek αἰσθητής.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + ancient Greek αἰσθητής person who perceives (see aesthete n.), here used for ‘organ of sense’; see quot. 1885. Compare megalaesthete n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (məikre·sþīt) /maɪˈkrɛsθiːt/.
Zoology.
In a chiton: any of the sensory structures found within micropores in the tegmentum of the valves. Cf. megalaesthete n.

1885 H. N. Moseley in Q. Jrnl. Microsc. Sci. 25 45 To the organs contained within the micropores I shall give the name micræsthetes.
1902 Encycl. Brit. XXX. 794/2 The pallial sense-organs which perforate the tegmentum are epithelial papillæ, innervated by the pallial cords..and covered by a dome of cuticle; they are termed, according to size, micræsthetes and megalæsthetes.
1958 J. E. Morton Molluscs viii. 147 The valves are pitted with very numerous sense organs..and are of two kinds. The most abundant are simple epidermal papillae called micraesthetes.
1976 Cell & Tissue Res. 172 379 In all species the surface terminations of the megalaesthete and micraesthete organs could be identified lying flush with the shell surface.
1992 M. Stachowitsch Invertebr. 194/2 One may distinguish larger megalesthetes or macresthetes (in megalopores) and smaller micresthetes (in micropores).
