Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin abscisorium cutting instrument (1363 in Chauliac; < classical Latin abscīs- , past participial stem of abscīdere abscise v. + -ōrium -ory suffix1); subsequently < classical Latin absciss-, past participial stem of abscindere abscind v. + -or suffix. With sense 1 compare earlier scissors n. 1. In sense 3 after abscission n. (see sense 3 at that entry).
