Etymology: < classical Latin Meroē ( < ancient Greek Μερόη , the name of a city of ancient Kush (now in Sudan) < Meroitic brdwy ; compare Bagrawia , the name of the corresponding modern region in Sudan) + -ite suffix1. Compare German Meroit , noun (1852 in the passage translated in quot. 1852 at sense A.).Meroe occurs as a place name in English contexts from Old English onwards.
