Etymology: < the name of Mezentius, a mythical Etruscan chieftain renowned for his acts of tyranny + -an suffix; compare -ian suffix. Compare earlier Mezentism n.
Characteristic of Mezentius (spec. with reference to a cruel or fatal union).In Virgil Aeneid 8.485–8 the story is told of how Mezentius caused living people to be bound face to face with corpses and left to die.
